FOOD WORKS LIKE DRUGS IN YOUR BODY

Would you believe putting food into your body is like taking drugs. The foods we eat act like drugs in the body so the question is this, are you eating good drugs or bad drugs?  The fact is every time you put food in your mouth you will experience pharmacological and biological reactions.  Therefore it is up to you to control the type of drugs you are eating!

Some of the good things food can do are to lower your cholesterol, your blood pressure, regulate your blood sugar, help you control pain, resist blood clots, etc.  Isn't that good news?  But there are two sides to every story so to speak.  You can take that same statement and turn it around to 'some of the bad things food can do are to raise your cholesterol, your blood pressure, your blood sugar.....'

There are numerous articles on this blog regarding the benefits and dangers of certain foods.  Start to take seriously the idea that everything you eat can and will affect your health.  You wouldn't take 'bad' drugs, why would you eat them?  Consider that thought before you put anything into your mouth.  If you do this for 1 week, you will no doubt be surprised at what you are doing to your body, therefore your health not only now but in the future!

FOOD PHARMACY

If you follow this blog, you know I am constantly talking about using food as medicine or in other words eating healthy so you can avoid conventional medicines as much as possible. Have you ever listened to a commercial for a pharmaceutical drug or read the paperwork that comes with a prescription? If not, you should. Yes, medications are often necessary, I take meds myself, but by eating healthy you can often cut your medicines way back and sometimes eliminate them all together! One of the most important things about using food as medicine is being allowed to remove some of the worry over the oft times frightening side effects of modern drugs. Over the years as I have done much research, I have cut back my prescription drugs tremendously. I now take very few drugs and I feel better than ever. If you are not currently eating a healthy diet, start today to make improvements in your food choices. You will be glad you did.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

We all know antibiotics very often save our lives. Antibiotics destroy nasty bacteria that causes serious infections, including strep, pneumonia, etc. Antibiotics, however, are not effective on viruses.

Some may ask "What is antibiotic resistance?" This occurs when infection-causing bacteria no longer respond to antibiotics. A few diseases we know are already becoming antibiotic resistant. MRSA and tuberculosis are some examples. More than 35,000 persons in the United States die annually due to this. Robin Patel, MD, director of the Infectious Diseases Research Lab at the Mayo Clinic put it this way, "We are facing a crisis."

There are ways to protect yourself and your family from antibiotic resistance as shown below:

  • Only take antibiotics when necessary (and do take them when they are necessary!). Don't insist on asking your doctor to prescribe antibiotics when they aren't necessary. As stated above, they are not effective on viruses, as an example.
  • Skip the overuse of antibacterial soaps, body washes, cleaners. Regular soap and water along with alcohol hand gels are just as effective. Add a little bleach to cleaners if you need to kill germs. This is effective in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Buy meats and poultry which are labeled "organic" or "raised without antibiotics". Much of the feed our poultry and animals are fed contains antibiotics which can be transferred to humans.

Most of us will probably never face an antibiotic resistant disease. But they are out there, and it may become a serious problem for some of us.
