ZINC TO COMBAT BODY ODOR

Studies have shown there may be relief for persons who battle body odor. If you feel like your deodorant isn't doing its job, try taking a 30 mg zinc supplement daily. This may help stop the growth of odor-causing bacteria under the arms and on feet!

SOME FACTS ON SHRIMP

Here are a few facts you may not know about shrimp:

  • 10 to 12 medium-sized shrimp will give you 24 g protein and only 1 g fat.
  • Those 10 to 12 medium-sized shrimp are only 99 calories (doesn't count butter, etc you add)
  • Shrimp is high in zinc
  • Frozen shrimp is often more fresh than that in the fresh seafood display case. Frozen shrimp is flash frozen right after it is harvested.
  • Shrimp is high in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

LET'S TALK TURKEY

Did you know that turkey breast roasted without the skin is lower in fat than any other commercially available meat?  That makes it a good choice for dieters and those watching their cholesterol levels.  In addition, it is a good source of zinc, iron, and the B vitamins.  The dark meat is good for you too.  It has more fat and calories than the breast, but it also has more iron and zinc.

Caution:  If you buy ground turkey, read the label!  Ground turkey often is mostly dark meat and may contain the fatty skin.  And remember self-basting turkeys are injected with saturated fat!

MORE REASONS TO EAT GARLIC

Yes, I know, garlic can linger on your breath!  You should probably eat it anyway!  There are so many benefits of garlic, many discussed on this blog in past posts.  Today I am reminding you that garlic can be beneficial to your heart and has a positive effect on you blood pressure.  But do you know that garlic can also protect against stomach and colon cancer?  Another recent study suggests that adding garlic (also onion) to whole grains may help your body absorb more of the iron and zinc from said grains.  A good way to use garlic with whole-grains is to put it in your pasta sauces and use whole-grain pasta.

EAT YOUR VEGGIES RAW OR COOKED?

One of the questions that often comes up is whether or not one should eat their vegetables cooked or raw to receive the most nutritional value.  Below is a list of the most often questioned vegetables and information to help you decide.  Personally I say have them both ways throughout the week, you will see why below.

  • Tomatoes: You receive health benefits from tomatoes no matter how you eat them.  They are one of the vegetables, however, that should be eaten cooked on a regular basis.  When tomatoes are cooked (think sauces) they give one a higher dose of their cancer-fighting lycopene.
  • Zucchini: Along with other squashes, zucchini gives one more beta-carotene (a building block for vitamin A) when cooked.
  • Spinach: Spinach is somewhat unique in that it has more vitamin C and folate when left raw.  It has more calcium and zinc when cooked.
  • Bell Peppers: More vitamin B when consumed raw.
  • Garlic: Garlic's health-protecting antimicrobial is lowered by cooking.
In a well-rounded diet, it is important to eat vegetables everyday both cooked and uncooked.

CHICKEN WHITE MEAT VS DARK MEAT

If you are one of those people who only eat the breast meat of chicken, you should consider adding some dark meat to your diet.  The meat from the legs and thighs has greater amounts of nutrients such as zinc and iron than does the white breast meat.

WALNUTS ARE NATURE'S MULTIVITAMIN AND A HAPPINESS FOOD

Walnuts are sometimes called the multivitamin designed by nature!  If walnuts are not currently a part of your diet, they should be!  Consider this list of vitally important nutrients packed into a little walnut:

  • trace minerals
  • macronutrients
  • magnesium
  • copper
  • iron
  • manganese
  • zinc
  • calcium
  • omega-3s
  • folate
  • other B vitamins
And I have probably missed one or two!  And by the way, walnuts are also considered 'happiness food."

BE CAREFUL ABOUT ELIMINATING BEEF FROM YOUR DIET

There is a reason we have so many different types of foods and one should be careful about eliminating any one particular food from one's diet.  Beef has often gotten a bad rap, and many avoid it in their diets.  But as I repeatedly state on this blog, never eliminate a food on a permanent basis without discussing it with your doctor. There are many reasons your doctor may feel you need to eliminate certain foods for various health reasons. However, it should be discussed with your doctor. Again, I repeat, eat everything in moderation for a healthy balanced diet and choose the low-fat versions. Would you believe red meat is brain food?  Red meat contains heme iron, the most absorbent form of iron.  The brain needs a constant flow of oxygen to operate, and oxygen depends on having iron.  Red meat helps to maintain the iron needed for our blood cells to keep that oxygen flowing to the brain.

Red meat is also a good source of vitamin B12, one of the components needed for our happiness quotient.  It is also one of the very best sources of zinc.  Research suggests that good zinc levels improve academic performance!

When possible, buy grass-fed beef and you will get 300 to 500% more CLA (conjugated linoleic acid - increases blood flow to the brain) than you will with conventional beef.

FEED YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Studies have shown that people whose diets are low in the following vitamins - A, C, D, Bs (includes folic acid) and the minerals iron, zinc, and selenium tend to have fewer and less active types of the important white blood cells that defend against invading microorganisms.  To keep yourself healthy, eat a well-balanced diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables, whole-grains, and low-fat dairy.  You should also eat a moderate amount of fish, lean meat, nuts, and healthy vegetable oils such as olive, canola, coconut, etc.

Don't get sick because you aren't eating right!

SUPPLEMENTS

As you can see below, this is an old article I am reposting. The importance of this article has recently had a bright light shined on it in my world. My 72-year-old husband kept falling because his legs would just fold up under him. About a week and a half ago he fell three times in one day. My son and grandson had to carry him to his bed because his legs were too weak to hold him up even with their help. He ended up getting an ambulance ride to the hospital where he stayed for 5 days and was then released to rehab for therapy. Tests showed him to be very low in sodium, potassium, and his adrenal gland function was low. He is a COPD patient and didn't like to eat because it was hard to eat and breathe at the same time. He had been relying on Ensure Plus, a good supplement but not a complete diet for the average person. His leg muscles had almost atrophied from lack of use. He was walking very little because of the falls. Long story short, with three good meals a day and extensive therapy he is now walking with a walker and/or a cane. We are made to take care of our bodies with food. It is important to eat a balanced diet (avoid fad diets, they always leave out something your body needs) and get some exercise if you want your body to function as God intended.

Some supplements, vitamins, etc may be needed to keep your body operating efficiently.  However, I do not recommend taking such products without discussing it with your doctor.  While the proper supplements, vitamins, minerals, etc can be very helpful, sometimes they can be harmful or simply a waste of money.  It is best to get what your body needs from food whenever possible.

I qualify that statement by saying I was on supplements for years and my doctors were aware of it and told me to take them.  Thus back to my point; I am not saying don't take them, I am saying discuss it with your doctor first.  If your doctor is one who won't even discuss such matters, perhaps you need a new doctor!

An example of harmful effects is zinc.  While zinc may be very helpful in some situations, it may actually hasten the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms.  I am not talking about taking a zinc tablet occasionally but researchers think that a buildup of zinc may cause those prone to Alzheimer's or in the early stages of the disease, to have their symptoms brought on more quickly.  Laboratory experiments have shown that zinc can transform the protein in brain cells into abnormal tangles indistinguishable from those of Alzheimer's.  Other studies have also shown that large-dose zinc supplements may bring on the progression of memory loss and other signs of the disease.

Again, based on my own experience, I no longer take supplements.  Because of having so much of my colon removed, I don't absorb them.  When I am low on a vitamin, mineral, etc, I have to have a shot.  So no matter how many high-powered supplement tablets I would take, I wouldn't absorb them enough to benefit.  So it would be a waste of money.

The supplement business in America today is big business.  Don't be fooled, discuss the situation with your doctor and go by what he/she recommends. And remember this, those who are trying to sell you supplements are usually making money off what you purchase.
